전주 동고산성의 성격에 대한 소고 - 6차 발굴조사를 중심으로

초록

동고산성(東固山城)은 전라북도 전주시 완산구 교동 ·대성동 일원의 승암산에 위치하고 있으며, 전라북도 지방기념물 제 44호로 지정되어 있다. 전주시의 동남쪽 해발 300m 남짓한 승암산(僧巖山)을 에워싸고 있는 포곡식 산성으로 둘레 1,574m, 동서 길이 314m, 남북 길이 256m이다. 성벽은 내탁식으로 축조하였으며, 서쪽구간 중 일부는 기암절벽을 이용하여 쌓았다. 특히 남쪽과 북쪽으로 뻗은 자연 능선을 감아 용도(甬道)와 같은 날개모양의 익성(翼城)이 있는 것이 특징이다. 동고산성의 조사는 주로 내부 시설에 대해서 집중되어있었기 때문에 동고산성의 축성방법, 시기, 성격 등을 파악하는데 많은 제약이 있었다. 하지만 최근의 5차 조사부터는 북문지, 동문지, 남성벽 등 성벽시설에 집중하여 조사가 이루어졌다. 동문지는 일자문 형식의 현문식 구조이며, 동문지 주변성벽 내벽부의 돌출부, 차단벽, 성벽외부, 남쪽측벽 등에서 개축 또는 수축의 흔적이 보임으로써 2차례 이상의 개축 또는 수리과정을 거쳤음을 알 수 있었다. 그 형태를 보면 우선 성벽 안쪽에 차단벽(내옹성)을 두고 차단벽와 성벽사이에 양쪽으로 갈라지는 계단을 설치하여 출입하였으며, 1차례 이상의 수리과정을 거쳤다. 성벽은 내탁식으로 축조하였고, 상부에서는 내벽을 일부 축조하였다. 지대석은 경사진 곳에서는 계단식으로 흙을 잡석과 섞어 다진 다음 쌓았고, 암반이 있는 곳에서는 그랭이 기법을 사용하여 쌓았다. 외벽은 들여쌓기를 하였으며 약간 배부른 형태의 장방형 또는 방형의 석재를 이용하였다. 내벽은 바닥에 흙을 먼저 다지고 장방형 또는 세장방형의 석재를 약간 거칠게 다듬어 사용하였다. 남성벽에 위치한 집수지는 초축시기에는 평면형태 원형의 집수지를 사용하다가 이후 규모를 줄여 평면 말각장방형으로 사용하였다. 배수시설(수구)은 성벽내측으로 암거식과 개거식의 배수구를 만들어 성내부의 물이 효과적으로 입수구를 통하여 배출될 수 있도록 하였고, 성외부에는 바닥에 할석과 잡석을 깔아 물이 잘 흘러내려가도록 하여 물이 고이거나 폐여 성벽의 기반이 약해지는 것을 막았다. 동고산성은 ‘全州城’ 명 기와를 근거로 견훤의 후백제 都城으로 보는 견해가 유력하게 제시되었으나 궁성이라고 판단하기에는 지형상 평지가 적고 성내부가 좁아 궁성으로 활용되었을 가능성은 희박하다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 출토유물에서도 생활용기와 철제무기류 등의 출토량이 소수에 불과해 상시 거주를 목적으로 하는 시설일 가능성 또한 낮다고 볼 수 있다. 그렇다고 한다면 ‘전주성’명 기와는 전주시내와 동고산성 등을 포괄하는 도성(전주성)을 지칭한 것으로 보아야 할 것이다. 궁성은 전주시내 일원에 위치하였을 가능성이 높으며, 동고산성은 그 궁성의 배후산성으로서의 기능하였을 것으로 추정이 가능하다.

영어초록

Donggo Fortress (東固山城) is located at the Mt. Seungamsan which stretches throughout the area of Gyo-dong and Daeseong-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea and has been designated as Jeollabuk-do Monument No. 44 by the provincial government. It is a mountain fortress of Pogoksik(包谷式) type surrounding the Mt. Seungamsan with about 300 meters above the sea level in the southeastern part of Jeonju-si and is 1,574 m in circumference, 314 m long from west to east and 256 m long from north to south. The fortress was built according to the method of Naetaksik (內托式), making use of rocks and cliffs of fantastic shape in some parts of the western section. It is especially characteristic of wing-shaped Ikseong (翼城) with Yongdos (甬道) that come down along the natural ridge stretching from north to south. The surveys of Donggo Fortress focused mostly on the internal facilities and were greatly limited, by thus, in determining the method, timing and special features of its construction. From the late 5th one on, however, the surveys were concentrated mostly upon the facilities of the fortresses like sites of the north and east gates, southern walls, etc. The site of the east gate is formed in iIjamun(一字門) with the structure of Hyeonmunsik (懸門式). Judging from the traces of alteration or repair found in the projecting parts, isolation walls, outer parts of the fortress, southern side walls, etc. along the internal walls of the east gate, it is presumed that they have undergone renovation or repair more than two times. By type of repair performed more than once, an isolation wall or Naeongseong (內甕城) was constructed inside the wall and steps were built to allow entry into the fortress in both directions between the isolation wall and the fortress. Naetaksik (內托式) was used to construct the fortress that has inside walls in part of the upper section. Groundwork for laying the foundation was conducted by tamping down and piling up the mixture of clay and broken stones from the base upward in the form of steps on the slope. Where there was rock bed, Grangyi technology was employed for construction. The outer wall was built in an indenting manner using square- or rectangle-formed building stones with a slight pot belly in the midst. For the inner wall, however, soil was tamped down first on the base and, then, stone materials of rectangle or fine rectangle form were put to use after slightly coarse trimming. The reservoir situated at the southern wall was of circular, plane format in the initial period but was reduced in size to the plane rectangle with longer side from west to east or Malgakjangbanghyeong (抹角長方形). The drainage system (waterway) is constructed in the form of underdrainage and open conduit so that the water may be drained efficiently from inside the walls to outside through the drainageway. Outside of the walls, talc or broken stones are paved on the ground to ensure water not to stay but to flow smoothly and, as a consequence, not to make the footing of the walls be weakened or flooded away. Donggo Fortress was strongly claimed to be the site for the capital of the Hubaekje Kingdom based on the tiles inscribed with the name of 'Jeonju Wall' on but such claim can not be sufficiently endorsed as the plane around it is not wide enough and the inside of the wall is too small to encompass a palace. The relics unearthed from the site include only a small number of utensils for living and iron-made weaponry, providing little evidence that they were used for the purpose of constant living. It is therefore more probable to say that the tiles with inscription of 'Jeonu Wall' referred to the provincial city (Jeonju Fortress) embracing the downtown of Jeonju and Donggo Fortress itself. It is highly likely suggested that the palace was located somewhere in the city of Jeonu and Donggo Fortress served as a supporting fortress of the palace.
