초록

본 논문은 주로 경상도와 전라도 지역에서 채록되는 <줌치 노래>를 대상으로 그 신화적
의미와 민요적 향유 양상에 대해 고찰했다. <줌치 노래>는 나무에서 열두 개의 가지, 삼백
예순 개의 잎, 해와 달이라는 열매가 열리는 모습을 묘사한 전반부, 그 해와 달을 통해 주
머니를 만드는 모습을 묘사한 후반부, 그리고 주머니를 매개로 다양한 서사가 펼쳐지는 결
말부로 나누어볼 수 있다.
<줌치 노래>의 전반부에는 열두 개의 가지와 삼백 예순 개의 잎, 그리고 해와 달이라는
열매를 가지는 나무가 등장한다. 이는 이족(彝族)의 창세신화나 우리나라의 <성주풀이> 무
가에서 찾아볼 수 있는 우주목과 그 형상을 공유하기 때문에 같은 의미망 안에서 파악할
수 있다. 하지만 <줌치 노래>의 나무에서 열린 해와 달은 창세신화의 그것과는 다르게 자
연물로서의 의미를 갖지 않고, 향유층들이 기원하는 바를 구체화하는 기능을 수행한다.
<줌치 노래>는 서사가 전반부에서 후반부로 넘어가는 과정에서 신화적 세계에서 일상
적 공간으로의 전위가 일어난다. <성주풀이> 무가와는 다르게 나무를 심는 신적 존재가 문
면에서 사라지며, 주머니를 만드는 주체가 새롭게 등장한다. <성주풀이> 무가에서 서사의
‘주체’에 성주신이 위치함으로써 무당들의 제의적 언어를 통해 신으로서의 권위를 획득하
고, 굿판에 참여한 청자들은 서사의 ‘객체’에 머물면서 신을 모시게 되는 메커니즘을 갖는다. 반면, <줌치 노래>에서는 서사의 주체-객체 관계를 전복시키고, 오히려 민요 향유자들
이 주머니를 만드는 행위를 통해 서사의 주체로 부상하면서, 신화적 요소들을 일상적인 맥
락으로 끌어올 수 있게 된다. 이는 <줌치 노래>에서 나타나는 ‘뿌리 없는 나무’가 등장할
수 있었던 배경과 밀접한 관계를 맺으며, 이후 서사의 결말부에서 <줌치 노래>의 향유층들
이 다양하게 해와 달이라는 신화소를 활용할 수 있는 기반이 된다.
<줌치 노래>의 결말부는 크게 두 가지 맥락에서 이해할 수 있다. 먼저 사랑을 소재로
한 유형에서는 전반부에 등장했던 우주목과 해와 달이라는 신화소를 적극적으로 받아들여,
이를 매개물로 자신의 소망을 기원하는 모습을 찾아볼 수 있다. 그리고 다른 측면에서는 해
와 달이라는 신화소를 일상에서는 구하기 힘든 귀중한 주머니 재료로 인식하여, 주머니를
만든 솜씨를 자랑하는 것으로 나아간다. <줌치 노래>가 신화적 세계에서 일상의 공간으로
전위되는 과정에서 향유층들이 주체적으로 신화적 모티프를 활용하는 모습을 확인할 수 있
는 부분으로, <줌치 노래>가 기원요․유희요․노동요 등의 성격을 공유하게 된 동인(動因)이라
고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the mythical feature of Pouch Song and its enjoyment
in Korean folksong. Pouch Song is one of Korean folksongs which has been
recorded mostly in Jeolla and Gyeongsang province.
Its lyrics contain the simple process of making pouch but with not usual
way. A pouch is made of the sun and moon which are one of the fruits of
some special tree. The tree has twelve branches, three hundreds sixty five
leaves and the sun and moon as abnormal fruits. The shape of it is similar
with the tree of life in myth about the creation of the world. Each number
of the part on the tree means a transition of the status from chaos to orderliness
because each of it stands for twelve months and three hundreds sixty five
days. However, it is not enough to explain the implied meaning of the sun
and moon. It is not easy to fine the sun and moon motif even in boundary
of myth.
We can find this mythical tree in Korean shaman's song titled Seongjupuri.
Seongjupuri is about the story of how Seongju god acquired the status of god.
In Seongjupuri, there is the tree named seongjumok and it also has same
numbers of branches and leaves with Pouch Song. Moreover, seongjumok has the sun and moon as fruits just like in Pouch Song. The sun and moon on
seongjumok performs a function that embodies wish or desire of audience
in gut. It could be summarized into rank and fame, longevity, and the
prosperity of one´s family. Therefore, we can deduce also the sun and moon
in Pouch Song has same meaning and function with seongjumok.
However, even though the same motif is found in both Pouch Song and
Seongjupuri, there is some difference. In Seongjupuri, Seongju god is a
subject of narrative from beginning to end. Seongju god planted seed and
it grew up to seongjumok. Seongju god built the first house in the world
with seongjumok. That is the way he became a god. On the other hands,
Pouch Song doesn't have the subject who sowed the seed of the tree. Even
if it had, he or she suddenly disappeared from the narrative and instead of
that, a person who is making a pouch in the narrative pops out to the subject,
which means people who enjoy the Pouch Song become the subject of
performance. It is totally different mechanism from Seongjupuri. Seongjupuri
is sung by mudang(shaman) with religious language that is only to use for
a god. The audience should be the object of the performance, and the sacred
world is sustained. In Pouch Song, the sacred world is overthrown by
eliminating the subject who are sacred, sowed the seed of the tree of life.
The spatial transposition from the sacred world to daily life happens so people
who sing Pouch Song can make a pouch with the sun and moon from the
sacred world.
The aspects of using the mythical motif 'sun and moon' could be organized
to two ways. One is similar to the function of seongjumok. People enjoying
Pouch Song wish their love to other sex or family member with Pouch. The
holy power from the tree is integrated to the fruit 'sun and moon', and people could make a wish to the pouch made of those sacred factors. The other way
is treating 'sun and moon' as a rare material which we are not able to find
in usual life. So the price of pouch is very high in a song and people can
boast about their pouch-making skills.
Therefore, on the perspective of function of folksong, variation occurs
because people have different cognition to the mythical motif 'sun and moon'
from the sacred tree.
