초록

최근 가속화되는 컴퓨터 통신망의 발달에 따른 학습 환경의 변화는 학교 교육의 내용 및 방법에 대한 진지한 성찰과 전환을 요구하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서, 본 연구에서는 하이퍼텍스트 학습 환경의 도입과 확장이라는 상황적 변화가 학교 교육에 주는 메시지를 읽고자 하였다.이를 위해 먼저 하이퍼텍스트의 역사와 특성을 간략히 살펴보고, 하이퍼텍스트 학습 환경의 특성을 네 가지 측면, 즉 첫째, 하이퍼텍스트 학습 환경과 학교 학습 상황과의 구조적 이질성, 둘째, 학습자의 통제권과 안내 체계 간의 수위 조정의 문제, 셋째, 학습자의 개인차에 따른 차별적 효과, 그리고 넷째, 하이퍼텍스트를 통한 학습의 본질적 한계 등을 중심으로 논의하였다. 한편 이러한 논의를 기초로, 학교 교육의 내용과 방법을 결정함에 있어서 중핵적인 역할을 수행해 온 교과서의 내용구성 방식을 반성적으로 검토하고, 하이퍼텍스트와 비교했을 때 차별적인 의의와 경쟁력을 가질 수 있는 교과서가 되기 위해 갖추어야 할 주요한 특성들을 제안하였다.

영어초록

This study attempts to explore the characteristics of hypertext-based learning environment and its implications for the textbook construction. The use of hypertext as a learning medium has been attracting much research in the field of educational technology. The basic rationale behind hypertext is that information can be presented in a non-linear format. Learners can make their ways through such an information-rich and highly interconnected programme in their own self-directed manner, instead of having to follow passively some form of pre-defined linearaccess.However, the freedom offered by hypertext-based learning environment may come at a price because flexibility increases complexity. Some learners who are uncertain of how to deal with non-linear learning situation may meet cognitive overload and disorientation problems. Many studies have shown that not every student can benefit from hypertext-based learning environment.Considering those significance and the weak points of the hypertext-based learning, the limitations of the current modes of textbook are identified, and the alternative ways of textbook construction are offered.The major drawbacks of the existing modes of textbook construction are as follows: the textbook content is regarded as a body of truth which has universal values; the textbook is composed of an encyclopedic compendium of objective information; and it is presented with the most recent version of reality stripped of debates, confusion, and discord and so on.The characteristics of the alternative vision of textbook construction could be summarized as follows: the textbook includes multiple point of view rather than a unilateral and neutral perspective; the author presents not only the most recent voice, but also the history of ideas, and the intellectual traditions; the textbooks are supposed to be the materials to think, explore, question with interest and curiosity, rather than the authoritative truth to master and internalize; the textbook presents useful scaffoldings to enable students to get an authentic sense of learning and so on.Key words : hypertext, hypertext-based learning environment, textbook construction
