ABSTRACT

초록

심훈의 작품 연구는 유독「常綠樹」(1935)에만 주목되어 왔다. 그리고 그의 작가적 명성만
큼 다른 작품 연구는 아주 소홀한 편이다. 그리고 심훈은 민족주의자로 알려져 있지만, 사실
은 사회주의, 민족주의, 자유주의 노선을 함께 겨냥한 사상적 배경을 지닌 작가이다. 그의 사
상적 경향이나 예술관, 시대와 사회 인식은 작품 「織女星」에 잘 그려지고 있으며, 곧 소설
작품의 내용 분석에서 잘 나타나고 있다. 소설 창작 뿐 아니라 시 창작, 영화 감독 등 여러
방면에 다채로운 삶의 경력을 지니고 있는 심훈 문학을 총체적으로 접근하기 위해서는「織女
星」에 대한 연구가 필수적이라고 생각한다. 특히 그의 대표적 장편「織女星」에 대한 연구
는 아주 미약한 실정이다. 따라서 본고는 심훈 문학의 재평가를 위한 일조로 그의 장편「織
女星」이란 텍스트를 놓고 소설기법적 측면에서 다루어 본 것이다.
먼저 소설의 공간적 층위에서 살펴보고자 하였는데, 중도적 주인공인 인숙의 ‘서사적 공간’
이라 할 수 있는 ‘果川’→‘會洞’→‘삼청동’→‘원산’으로 이어지는 공간적 층위이다. ‘과천’은 인
숙의 어린 시절 ‘방울’의 공간으로, 班家의 중세적 생활 풍습과 유교적 가치관이 그대로 살아
있는 곳으로, ‘각시놀음’이 암시하는 이야기의 상징 공간이자 早婚, 생활, 교육 등 舊習의 문
화가 자리하는 공간이다. 다음으로 ‘會洞’은 인숙이가 早婚해 들어 간 시집살이의 공간으로,
조혼의 폐해와 시어른들의 ‘노리개’감으로 파란만장하게 겪는 인숙의 갈등이 노정되며, 윤자
작과 그의 식솔들이 겪는 방탕과 반역이 소용돌이치는 곳이며, 또한 有産階級의 몰락상이 펼
쳐지는 암울한 배경 속에 자유연애사상과 無産階級 운동이 전개되기도 한다. 그리고 ‘삼청동’
은 시련의 극점 공간인데, 인숙이 시댁에서 쫓겨나고 득남하지만 누명을 쓰고, 일남의 죽음으
로 자살미수에 이르는 첨예하게 갈등구조가 상승하는 곳이다. 마지막으로 ‘원산’은 인숙이가
이혼을 하고 여성으로서 자아정체성을 확보해 가는 구원의 공간으로 그려지고 있다.
두 번째는「직녀성」의 인물 층위에서 본 소설 기법이다.「직녀성」에는 많은 인물이 드러
나지만 실제 갈등의 핵심을 보여주는 인물은 1차적으로 ‘인숙 : 봉환’이고, 2차적으로는 ‘인
숙 : 경직, 윤 子爵의 식솔’과의 관계이다. 여기에서 인숙은 중도적 인물로 ‘갈등극복형’의
인물이다. 나아가 세철,복순은 ‘투쟁적 의지형’으로 유산 계급자인 봉환, 윤 자작’과의 갈등
관계에 있다. 여기에서 주목해야 할 인물이 봉희다. 봉희는 세철 복순의 지향점과 같이 심훈
이 당대에 추구하고 사상을 실천하는 이상적인 신여성이다. 나아가 봉희는 신여성․자유연애
사상의 코드로 어둡고 암울한 이야기의 진행에 생동감을 주는 아주 중요한 역할을 한다. 그
리고 인숙의 남편 봉환은 쾌락지향형의 미성숙한 인물로 나약한 班家의 몰락상을 펼쳐 보이
는 전형적 인물이며, 경직이나 용환 모두 班家의 후예로 시대적 탕아로 설정되어 있다. 그리
고 구세대 班家의 가장으로 설정된 ‘이한림․윤 자작’은 구습을 견지함으로써 세대간의 갈등
을 야기하는 부정적인 인물이다.
세 번째로 「직녀성」이라는 소설 텍스트는 영화 장르로의 전환 요소를 지닌 작품으로, 서
사적 소설기법의 양상을 보인다. 따라서 영화로의 전환을 전제로 한「직녀성」의 서사적 공
간은 크게 네 측면으로 나뉜다. 그리고 이 네 측면의 공간 이동마다 이들 인물들은 어디까지
나 갈등을 유발하는 상대적 인물로 설정되어 있고, 그 공간들은 드라마적, 혹은 영화 구성법
과 유관하다. 특히 인숙이라는 주인공에 의해 이끌어 가는 서사의 진행 방식이면서 갈등을 유
발하는 이야기 구조에 치우쳐 있다. 그리고 전지적 시점에 의한 화자의 서술 기법이 '말하기
(telling)' 방식의 흐름을 보여주다가도, 인숙과 봉희가 나오는 장면은 ‘보여주기’(showing)
방식으로 이루어지고 있다는 점이 특이하다.

영어초록

From the aspects of fictitious technique, I examined the text of 'Jikyesung'
largely in three parts. First, I examined the spatial aspects of the novel.
Let me examine the spatial aspects for middle-character Insook's abiding. As
Insook's the narrative spaces being changed from Guachun Hedong,
Samchungdong Wonsan, the story is developed around her dwelling. 'Guachun' is
the space for Insook's childhood as 'Bangwool.'Guanchun is the place where many
old- fashion values such as Confucianism are being maintained and noble-classes'
living styles are being emphasized. The place is symbolic space of the story as
'gaksinolum' implies and cultural space that reflects old-fashion manner such as
early marriage, living, education and so on. The following place is 'Hedong.' The
place is the space where Insook has been spending her hard time living because
of her early marriage. The space shows abusive customs on early marriage
through Insook's conflicts and adversity as teased by her parents-in-law who
regard Insook as a plaything. Also, the place is space shows the prodigality
prevailing prodigality and rebellion among Yun and his family members. Here, the
author developed the story through contrasting situations such as gloomy times
the decline of propertied classes versus free love and proletarian movement.
The third place of the story is 'Samchungdong.' The place is the space for the
climax of Insook's adversity such as being forced out of her house by the parents
in law, false suspicion despite of giving birth of her son, Ilnam's death, and its
related Insook's failure of suicide, etc. Here, sharp and high conflicts in the
structure of the story are taking place. The last place of the story is 'Wonsan.'
The place is being described as the rescue space for divorced Insookwho is
making sure of her identity as a woman.
Second, I analyzed fictitious techniques from aspects of a variety of character
established in the story 'Jikyesung.'A variety of character appeared in the story.
However, the central character of conflicts are Insook versus Bonghan. Secondly,
conflicts take place among the relationships between Insook versus Keyungsik,
Yun, and Yun's family members. Here, Insook is described as middle character.
Rather than the story shows directly the conflict relationships between Sechul and
Boksoon versus Bonghan and Yun, the author described Sechul and Boksoon as
fellows of Insook and their conflicts against the propertied classes. The
relationship between Bonghee and Jangbal is also in conflict. The character we
concern is Bonghee. She pursues the same goals and ideas that Sechul and
Boksoon do. Bonghee is described as an ideal character, a new-era woman who
practices new ideas, philosophy, and goal which the author, Sim Hun, pursues on
his time. Friendly relationships among Insook, Bonghee, Sechul, and Boksoon are
maintained in the story, including many minor characters such as the student
studying in Dongkyung and Sayoko; Lee hanrim, Doctor, Heu Jungja, and so on.
Each character has the following characteristics. Insook is being described as
having middle character who is a victim of early marriage and old customs, and
the character is created as a type of person who is 'overcoming difficulties.'
Sechul and Bonghee are described as frontiers of movement against propertied
classes and the character is being beautified as person who have 'combative will"
and they become spiritual supporters for Insook and Bonghee. Bonghee is an
important character in the story of which gloomy background and abusive for
women. Her character as a modern woman who has the idea of free love provide
readers with vivid feeling. Bonghan is described as the character of a premature
man who pursues only pleasure and fun. His character shows a stereotype seen
the decline of propertied classes.
Keyungjik and Yonghan are described as descendants of propertied classes and
prodigal sons. The author created Lee hanrim and Yun who are the heads of
family members of propertied classes who are trying to maintain the old customs,
and they are described as having negative character teasing conflicts between two
different generations.
Third, the text of 'jikyesung' has factors transmittable into a genre for film and shows aspects of narrative techniques in writing novel. Therefore, narrative space
of the novel 'Jikyesung'includes four different situations if the story is turned into
film. For each of four situations, the story includes characters who develop
conflicts asantagonistic roles. The narrative spaces are dramatic or much related
to making film. In other words, the story proceeds in narrative ways as Insook's
living goes on, as well as the story structure shows inclining toward causing
conflicts. In writing the novel, the author used two different techniques: (a) telling,
a narrative technique by a teller and (b) showing technique in the scene appearing
Insook and Bonghee. The use of two techniques in writing the novel is one of
unique aspects in Jikyesung.
