양주지역 설화의 전승양상을 통해본 이야기문화의 현황과 향방

초록

이 연구는 설화의 현재적 전승양상을 파악하기 위하여 양주지역의 3개 읍면을 표본집단으로 삼아 현지조사한 성과를 토대로 하여 이루어졌다. 전설의 전승은 80대부터 60대에 이르는 노년층을 중심으로 이루어졌으며, 거주지역이 중심이 된 지명 유래가 주를 이루었다. 전설 전승은 쇠퇴했지만, 전설적 관심은 전세대에 걸쳐 귀신이나 도깨비 등을 비롯한 ‘기이’를 주조로 하는 새로운 이야기형태로 자리바꿈하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
민담의 전승은 60-80대에서나 가능한 것으로 확인되었으며, 연령층에 따른 이야기문화의 향유방식에서도 일정한 차이가 있음이 발견되었다. 50대 이하 세대가 이야기문화의 전통단절 양상을 뚜렷하게 보여주고 있었음에 비해, 청소년들의 구연목록이 다양하고 풍부하다는 사실은 이야기문화의 향방에 접근하는 중요한 단서를 보여주고 있다. 이야기문화는 현대의 문화적 환경을 적극 활용하여 TV, 인터넷, 동화책 등등 매체들을 중심으로 새롭게 재편되어야 하리라는 것이다.
오늘날 변화된 문화적 환경 아래서도 인간의 삶과 함께 해왔던 이야기문화의 가치와 의의에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하고 그것을 현실문맥에서 구체화하는 실천적 방안을 모색하는 것이 우리에게 주어진 과제이다. 이야기문화가 우리의 삶과 문화 안에서 재현될 수 있도록 교육이나 활용에 깊은 관심을 기울일 필요가 있다. 이러한 작업에는 설화의 문화적 가치를 깊이 인식하고 있는 연구자들의 역할이 중요할 것인데, 다양한 매체를 이용한 교육 또는 이야기문화체험 프로그램이나 문화콘텐츠의 개발을 적극적으로 이루어내어야 할 것으로 본다.

영어초록

This study is based on the results of the field study on samples of two Eups one Myeon in Yangjoo area - Joonae Eup, Baikseok Eup, Kwangjeok Myeon. The field study was carried on for 20 days in more than 10 sessions by 15 researchers. The subjects of the study were residents of the area whose ages range from 10 to 80s. By the result of this field study, more than 330 pieces of legends and folk tales and numerous cases of personal stories were gathered.

The transmission of legend was done mainly by those in 60s and over and it regards mostly with names of the places in which they live. It was also found out that though the transmission of legend becomes rarer, the interest in the legend still remains throughout the generations and replaced in the new story forms of 'god-like' ghosts and 'doggaibi'.

The transsion of folk tales was only possible within those in 60s through 80s. It was found out that ways to enjoy the story culture varies with generations. Compared to those in 80s who inherited a rich oral story tradition, those in 70s, while showing some degree of connection with those in 80s, have demonstrated rationality and tendency of single-story- form(단형화)in selecting objects of and constructing oral stories, which are the main traits of those in 60s. This shows both continuity and change in cultural transmission. On the other hand, the generations under 50s display a clear sign of disconnection in oral story tradition and younger generations show wider and richer range of oral story items. This points to an important clue in setting a direction for the development of story culture. The story culture should be reconstructed with newly developed media such as TV, Internet and children's story books.

Our present duty is to recognize the value and meaning of the story culture which have existed with human lives in ever changing cultural environments and to find ways to realize them in real lives. Today the story culture is being experienced through various printed materials, visual materials and mass media programs. The issues of education and popularization of oral stories in various ways are becoming more important and we need to be more concerned about educating and using oral stories so that they become a part of our daily lives and culture. For this, the role of researchers who are well aware of the cultural value of the oral stories is important in educating people utilizing various media and in developing programs and cultural contents related to oral stories.
