서 론
마태복음 1장 18~25절에 대한 말씀은 동정녀 탄생에 대한 구약의 예언의 성취를 가리킨다고 들어왔고, 또 그렇게 성경을 읽어 왔다. 하지만 이 구절이 이사야 7장 14절에서 아하스 왕을 향한 하나님의 징조로 주어졌다는 사실에 대해서는 많은 사람들이 간과하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 하나님께서 이사야 선지자를 통해 아하스왕에게 이 징조를 주신 배경과 이유는 무엇이며, 이 구절이 왜 마태복음의 예수님 탄생에 대한 말씀에 인용되었는지를 아는 것은 마태가 독자들에게 말하고자 하는 바가 무엇이며, 그 말씀이 2장의 내용과 어떤 연관을 가지고 우리에게 가르침을 주고자 하는지 깨닫게 해주기 때문에 반드시 마태복음 1장 18-25과 이사야 7장 14절에 대한 분명한 이해에 도달해야만 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 마태복음 1장 18-25절에 인용된 이사야 7장 14절의 언어적, 역사적, 신학적 배경을 살피고, 마태 당시의 이스라엘 민족의 역사적, 신학적 배경을 살펴서 마태가 본문을 통하여 독자들에게 주고자 했던 메시지가 무엇인지에 대한 가장 성경적으로 타당한 결론을 도출하여 삶에 적용하는 데 그 목적이 있다.

그 상황 속에서 하나님께서 아하스와 이스라엘 백성들에게 주신 징조를 대비시키고 있는 것이다. 하나님께서 불신앙과 악행으로 하나님의 말씀을 거절했던 아하스 왕에게 그의 불신앙에도 불구하고 임마누엘이라고 불릴 아이가 그 여자에게서 태어날 것인데 그 아이가 선악을 구별하기 전에 아람과 이스라엘을 멸망시키고 유다를 구원하시겠다는 징조를 주셨고, 실제로 이사야 선지자가 아내를 가까이 하여 낳은 아들 마헬살랄 하스바스가 내 아빠 내 엄마라고 부르기 전인 주전 722-720년에 아람과 북이스라엘이 앗수르에 의해 멸망한 사건을 대비시키면서, 이처럼 비록 이스라엘 백성이 현재 불신앙에 빠져 어둠 속에 빠져 허우적대고 있어도 반드시 그들의 죄에서 건져내어 구원하실 것이며 그것에 대한 징조로 그리스도, 즉 임마누엘이라 불릴 아이가 태어날 것인데 이는 아하스 왕 때 주어진 징조가 실제로 일어났던 것처럼 이 징조 또한 확실하고 믿을 만 하다는 것을 가르쳐주고 있다.
