The field of study known as comparative economic systems examines how differences in economic systems influence resource allocation.  The economic system is the set of organizational arrangements that, along with differences in national economic policies and natural settings, influence the outcomes of economic activity.  Economists interested in different economic systems attempt to define the nature of the system and system differences and to isolate their impact on resource allocation.  The traditional “isms” of capitalism, socialism, and communism were the defining characteristics in comparative economic systems for many years. Recent events have, however, shifted concern away from capitalism and communism toward an understanding of a broader spectrum of organizational variants.  These variants are defined in terms of the key features of the structure and functioning of organizations specifically, the ownership arrangements (private, public or mixed), the information mechanisms used within organizations (market, plan, or mixed), the levels of decision making (centralized, decentralized, or mixed) and the incentive arrangements designed to motivate system participants (monetary, moral, or mixed)
Economic systems arise in real-world (country) settings and can be changed and modified over time.  The most important difference among various economic systems today (as opposed to, say, 20 years ago) is precisely the issue of change.  The world is no longer divided into neat competing blocs of capitalist and socialist or communist countries.  What we see instead are economics undergoing change.  The major direction of the former communist economies is transition-the movement from the administrative command system of socialism to market capitalism. The major direction of change in the industrialized West has been the search for improved policies and better organizational arrangements.
