Maritime Piracy in Captain PhillipsKang Jihoon 15212000474Captain Phillips is a film released in 2013 that is based on the 2009 pirate encounter of Maersk Alabama, a cargo ship en route to Kenya, in the Indian Ocean. Somali pirates attacked and invaded the marine vessel and held the crew hostages until the United States Navy SEALs were able to successfully carry out a rescue operation. Using the film, as an illustration, the purpose of this essay is two-fold. First, the security issue of pirate activities in the vast oceans is identified, discussed, and interpreted based on how the film represents the issue. Second, the essay argues my opinions that pirate activities require stringent implementation of international policies; the film may fail to accurately relate the true 2009 hijacking event, but it is able to portray the realistic underlying issue of piracy in the oceans. The main security issue highlighted in the film is the instance of pirate activities in the oceans. The identifie to focus on the economic aspect of the pirate attack since the focus is on the emotional and thrilling aspect of the encounter, the issue is certainly a threat to global trade activities. According to Desai and Shambaugh (2021), the economic loss from pirate activities amounts up to 16 billion USD each year. The cost includes the expenses of shipping companies to install added protection against a potential pirate attack. In sum, the case of a pirate attack is a threat to human security and the efficiency of the economic exchange of goods across international waters. The occurrence of maritime piracy is not new since there are stories from antiquity that have narrated instances of pirate activities. Moreover, there are countless fiction stories written for all ages that have been inspired by the life of pirates. In these fiction stories, the focus is on the adventurous aspect of pirate life. Comparatively, in the film, the emphasis is on the criminal aspect of piracy. In other words, tNavy SEALs is suggestive of the need for an expert military intervention to ensure that lives are protected from the criminal act of piracy.Since pirate activities involve different countries and nationalities on a territory that is technically shared by the international community, it is governed by international policies; thereby, these policies should be implemented in a stringent manner in order to contain the issue. In the film, the role of US Navy SEALs to resolve the issue is magnified; however, it also brings the question as to whether it is always necessary to call for expert military intervention instead of relying on policy implementation. For example, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is a policy that focuses on security issues in maritime operations. The policy covers numerous guidelines to ensure safety, such as guidelines for port control, governance, and management practices for ship d articles from different perspectives, the biopic of Captain Phillips is a failure in terms of relating the actual event; nonetheless, the film is able to portray the reality of pirate activities. Reviews of the movie such as one written by Child (2013), the biopic is a false account of the then captain of Maersk Alabama. Based on the article, the ship captain was not a heroic figure, as evident in the lawsuit filed by the ship's crew members against an incompetent leader and management. However, despite this claim which concerns a single individual who is incorrectly portrayed in the movie, the film in the context of maritime security issues is able to completely publicise and reflect the reality. Even though the film is limited to Somali pirates, which indeed has been acknowledged as one of the major pirate groups that the international community has been warned about (Iglesias-Baniela & Vinagre-Ríos, 2012), pirate activities do happen in other areas such as Southeast Asia (Prins etndanger human life and hinder international trade. At the same time, although the movie has been considered as a false account of the ship's captain and his questionable leadership abilities, it remains as a realistic reflection that portrays pirates as offensive criminals, which contradicts the fictional image of pirates as a figure of adventure and fun. Ultimately, the movie is indicative of the importance of intervention and cooperation to resolve maritime piracy.ReferencesAhmad, M. (2020). Maritime piracy operations: Some legal issues.
