Introduction

Since the United States and Korean government started negotiating Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2006, the representatives of both countries declared that the talk finally reached the successful agreement on April 2nd, 2007 (Overby, 2007). Traditionally, the US and Korea have maintained a strong military and close economic relations since Korean War. In 2006, the volume of trade between the two countries increased to approximately $77 billion a year, thus this formed the US Korea’s third largest trading partner and Korea the United States’ seventh largest trading partner (Fifield, 2007a). This FTA between two countries stands to be the most significant free trade agreement since the North America Free Trade Agreement (Coyner, 2008). Because of expected influences on both countries and trade and economy in the Asia, this FTA has become an interesting subject and significant issue. The aim of this project is to outline the current trends of FTA in Asia. It will also discuss the main issues between the two countries and then predict the effects of the FTA on Korea with regard to economical and social factors.



1. Recent trend of FTA in Asia
Over the last half decade, Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) have increased sharply in the Asia – Pacific area, especially in East Asia. While PTA has become widespread all around world, only a small number had been conducted in that region before 2000 (Feridhanusetyawan, 2005). However, Asian countries such as Korea and Malaysia overcame the economic crisis which occurred in 1997 and damaged the fundamental finance system and the currency exchange of Southern Asia. In addition, they started boosting the PTA talks over the Pacific and decreasing the trade barriers such as high tariffs.
