Differences between Using Public Transportation and a Private Vehicle
There is a middle school student who lives in Seoul. She has just made a sudden appointment to meet her friend and finished a phone call. Now she is getting ready to go out to visit her friend’s house in an adjacent city, Incheon. However, there is nobody around who can give her a ride. Her friend’s place is about twenty three km from her house. How would you expect her to make the long journey to visit her friend? Calling her parents to come back home from work and give her a ride or getting a cab might work, but they are either too bothersome or cost-prohibitive. The general answer to this question in Korea is just getting information about the most ideal transportation to use and using them. By doing so, she arrived at her friend’s in one and a half hour, and it only cost her around two dollars. Korea has a cheap, clean, safe, pretty much ubiquitous and well-developed transportation system. Despite these remarkable advantages that Korean transportation provides, according to the statistical data called “The Present Condition of Automobiles per Person” from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the number of passenger vehicles in private possession has steadily increased from 46,266,000 to 49,269,000 during the last decade. This is due to some significant distinct characteristics that private cars and public transportation have.
