The speaker of the poem stands in front ofthe road forked off in two. The seasonal background of the poem is autumn because the speaker says the wood is yellow. A yellow wood(line1, stanza1) means a wood full of trees whose leaves are tinged with yellow. The speaker considers which road he (we do not know the gender of the speaker, but from now on, I will use he for convenience) shouldchoose. Because his body is only one, he cannot walk both of the roads at the same time, so he cannot but choose one road. He feels sorry not to take one of thetwo roads and looks down one as far as he can. And then, he finally chooses the other road thatlooks as beautiful as the one he looked down so long. The reason why he takes the road is that it has "the better claim (line2, stanza2) which means it seems to have fewer tracespeople passed and to have to be walked more. Actually both of the roads were not taken so much as he says in the third stanza. The two roads were all covered with fallen leaves and there were no signs of people in the morning. He knows the way is continued by another way and it happens in succession, so he may not be able to come back to the road he does not take, but he chooses the road even though it was grassy(line3, stanza2) and it will make all the difference (line5, stanza4).
The speaker is a little proud of the road he took, but actually he is more like to be regretful of the road he did not take, seeing that the title is The Road Not Taken. However, his quiet and serene tone makes us confused to know his feeling well, in fact.
