As suggested in its Latin origin “schola”, the historically forerunning minds of scholarship are presumed to be the scholastics in the Medieval Europe, who imparted Christian doctrines fighting against Greco-Roman paganism and European chivalric spirits. However, the modern concepts of scholars and scholarship were derived from the Renaissance humanistic strain, as implied in the definitions of OED. One of the OED definitions of the word “scholar” is that a scholar is one “who has acquired learning in the ‘Schools’” and especially “who is learned in the classical (i.e. Greek and Latin) languages and their literature”. In the case of the word “scholarship”, it refers to “[t]he attainment of a scholar; learning, erudition; esp. proficiency in the Greek and Latin languages and their literature”. Both definitions are based on the Renaissance humanists and their classical learning. However, the function of the Renaissance scholars as humanists like Thomas More was not confined in learning classical knowledge but closely affiliated with social and political issues, as that of Confucian scholars was. And, indeed, they were vigorous disputants.
Nonetheless, the disintegration of the scholars’ general and specific functions can be witnessed in a Renaissance giant Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare draws lines among courtiers, soldiers and scholars: “O! what a noble mind is here o’er-thrown: / The courtier’s, soldier’s, scholar’s, eye, tongue, sword” (Hamlet, III, i, 159). He describes a scholar as “Exceeding wise, fair-spoken, and persuading” (Henry VIII, IV, ii, 51).
