현재 영국 비즈니스 스쿨에서 석사과정을 수강하면서 작성한 영문에세이입니다. 리더십에 대한 본질적인 질문, 과연 리더는 타고난 것인지 아니면 만들어지는 것인지에 대한 고찰과 리더가 타고난 것이라고 주장하는 trait theory가 현재의 경영환경과 얼마나 연관성을 가지는지를 탐구한 에세이입니다. reference 포함하여 총 12장입니다. 교수님으로부터 좋은 피드백을 받은 에세이입니다.

We are living in a complex society which consists of various groups with different purposes, such as schools, companies and organisations. As Freud (1927; cited in Higgs, 2003) noted, individuals in groups need leaders to provide them with a sense of identity and purpose. Therefore, leaders have been requisite position all the time and especially the role of leaders in the business context seems crucial. With the rapid development of the society, the attention to leaders is getting increase because it is no exaggeration to say that the success of the business contingents on leaders’ ability and effective leadership. ‘Now leadership is seen as the main source of organisational success and the key determinant of organisational performance’ (Storey, 2004, p.73).

There have been a significant number of studies over centuries about leader and leadership. This essay will explore the most traditional and controversial leadership theories－the trait approach－by asking this question “Are leaders born or made?” and draw an attention to whether leaders’ special characteristics or qualities have relevance in modern business world.
