Sammy, who is a 19-year-old boy, works at A&P which is a supermarket near a beach. One day, three girls with bathing suits got into the supermarket, and they captured Sammy’s attention. He fell in love with third one named Queenie. However, his old and married manager, Lengel started to scold them for wearing bathing suits in the supermarket. Sammy announced to quit, took off his apron, and went out of the supermarket. However, the girls were already gone. And he felt how unfeeling the world is.
I think the theme of this story is about suffering of a human being which is under pressure from a society, and human desire for coming out from the different society.
The story deals with a conflict between different cultures. All things in a supermarket are standardized, wrapped and priced. The manager who supervises the A&P is an old, married person, and he’s a friend of the narrator’s parents. Therefore, the supermarket stands for a strict rule or society in which an individual can not resist, and the manager stands for a different culture from the Sammy’s.
