Whales have fascinated human beings over centuries due to their size and evolutionary might. However, it was realised the potential of whales was a natural resource that could meet their needs. As such, whales were hunted for their meat, oil, and other materials that greatly benefited people of the time. Nonetheless, during the earliest period of hunting, human beings had minimal regulations or enforcement abilities to ensure whales were not excessively hunted. In the end, whales were nearly hunted to extinction across the world, which caused significant concerns among various stakeholders . The issue spurred the rising of various international environmental movements across the world championing for protection and conservation of whales, which contributed to the increase in environmental activism across the globe. As such, it is crucial to analyse the ecological movements and how the rise in them correlates to whaling and environmental activism.
