    근골격계는 골격과 세 종류의 근육으로 구성되어 있으며 움직임이나 자세의 변화를 가능하게 하며 골격은 지지 및 보호와 함께 움직일 수 있는 기반을 제공하고 골격근은 수축을 통해 움직임이 일어날 수 있도록 한다. 또한 골격은 칼슘이나 다른 무기질의 저장소 역할을 하며 체중의 40~50%를 차지하는 골격근은 대사와 체온조절의 주요 역할을 하기 때문에 장애가 생긴다며 움직임의 제한은 물론 신경학적으로도 많은 문제들이 생긴다. 그 중 골절은 주변의 연조직도 손상시키고 근육, 인대, 신경, 혈관 등을 파열시켜 회복이 어려울 수도 있고 생활양식에 많은 제한들이 따를 수도 있다. 그 중 자유팔뼈 중 근위상완골절은 노인의 외상성 손상의 경우 흔히 발생한다. 골다공증이 있는 경우는 심한 낙상이 아니더라도 상완골절이 발생할 수 있다. 노인들은 주로 사용하는 오른쪽 팔에 손상을 입기 때문에 운동장애가 일어나며 매사에 의존적이게 된다.
