INTRODUCTION
This is a basic market description of the small business jet market. The topics covered are market size, distribution structure, competition, consuming units and special aspects. The small business jet market is in its infancy. Totally new products, such as the Cessna Mustang, Eclipse Jet, and Safire S-26, are still in development and are not expected to begin delivery until 2006 at the earliest. The small business jet market has the opportunity to bring economic prosperity back to the aviation industry. However there are number of roadblocks that must be passed in order for this to occur.
In order to effectively reach the small business jet target market, distribution structures are being used. Eclipse is starting fresh with a new company, a new product and a new distribution structure. Meanwhile Cessna is using their long established structure. These structures focus on a variety of activities and customer groups. External groups that could be served by small business jets are small businesses, personal owners, flight schools, air taxi operations, and other general aviation interests.
Competition with current airlines and current regular business jets put the small business jet market on a tough road to establishing a market segment. Consuming unit information is provided in order to see an overall view of the current business jet market. Also, special interests are playing an important role in the small business jet and will do so in the future.
