‘가정전문간호사’는 대학원을 결정하기 전까지는 매우 생소한 단어였다. 현재 약 7년간 근무 중인 병원의 가정간호사업소가 97년도부터 운영 중이었으나 나에게는 너무나 먼, 친숙하지 않은 존재였다. ‘가정간호’에 관심이 생긴 것은 현재 2년째 근무 중인 혈액종양내과 병동으로 근무지 이동을 하면서부터이다. 암환자들이 가정 호스피스를 연계하며 퇴원하거나, 가정간호를 받다가 예기치 않은 상황으로 재입원하는 경우들을 잦게 볼 수 있었다. 그래서 가정간호에 대해 관심을 갖고 관련 자료들을 공부하기 시작했고, 결국엔 가정간호를 제공하는 전문 간호사가 되고 싶었다.
혈액종양내과 병동에서 근무하다 보면, 암환자들의 항암 후의 부작용이나 전신 상태 악화로 재입원하는 경우가 빈번하다. 또한 퇴원 후 예기치 않은 증상들로 인해 병동으로 문의전화도 끊이지 않는다. 가정간호 대상자의 41-48%를 차지하는 암환자에게 가정에서의 질환 및 항암화학요법 등에 대한 충분한 교육과 간호가 제공된다면 환자는 더 안정감을 갖고 자가 간호 능력을 키워 항암 후 변화에 적절하게 대처할 수 있을 것이라 생각했다. 혈액종양내과병동에 있으면서 가정간호의 중요성과 필요성을 체감하게 되었고, 가정간호가 환자들 심지어 의료진들에게도 낯선 존재라는 것이 안타까웠다. 그래서 내가 직접 가정전문간호사가 되어 가정간호에 대한 인식을 널리 알리고 이용률을 늘려 환자의 건강과 간호 발전에 이바지하고자 했다. 현재 근무중인 병동의 프리셉터로서 신규 간호사나 근무지 이동한 간호사에게 병동의 기본적 및 혈액종양내과 관련 업무를 교육하며 병동 환경에 잘 적응하도록 교육하고 있다. 임상생활을 하며 체득한 간호 전문지식과 실무 경험을 나누며, 교육자로서 더 공부하고 전문지식을 쌓아 양질의 교육을 제공하고 싶었다. 전문 지식들을 쌓아가며 공부하는 것이 재미있고 보람차게 느껴졌고, 이를 쉽고 정확하게 교육하는 것 또한 나의 적성에 맞는다고 생각했다.
