Ⅰ. We have to solve the health issue of ‘Chronic diseases’!
Though there are several global health issues that needs to be solved, chronic diseases are the most urgent health issue that needs to be addressed. Chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both.i These chronic diseases include both infectious chronic diseases and non-communicable chronic diseases,ii but this paper will focus on non-communicable chronic diseases, and use the term ‘chronic diseases’ and ‘non-communicable diseases(NCDs)’ together.
Then, why we have to address NCDs as most important global health issue that needs to be solved? This is because, NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes impose excessive global burden of diseases. Over 70% of global deaths are atrributable to NCDs,iii and 41 million people die from NCDs each year.iv Even 15 million people aged 30-69 die prematurely from NCDs each year.v Also this leads to excessive health expenditure.
