사회불안은 사회적 상황에서 경험하는 두려움을 특징으로 하는 감정이다. 이러한 불안이 심각한 경우 사회적, 직업적 기능에 부정적인 영향을 주게 된다. 대학생의 경우 학교 내에서 다양한 사람들과 만나야 하는 일이나 낯선 사람들 앞에서 수행을 해야 하는 경우가 빈번하다. 이러한 환경은 자신의 수행을 부정적으로 지각하는 사회불안이 높은 대학생들의 학업과 대인관계에 어려움을 초래할 수 있다(Dannahy & Stopa, 2007). 따라서 사회불안의 특징을 이해하고 적절히 개입하는 것은 대학생의 정신건강 도모에 중요하다.
사회불안의 인지모형에서는 다양한 인지 편향이 사회불안의 발생과 유지에 영향을 준다고 가정한다. 사회불안이 높은 사람들은 사회적 상황을 지각하였을 때 “불안 프로그램”이 자동적으로 활성화 된다. 불안 프로그램은 진화적으로 환경의 위험으로부터 우리를 보호하기 위한 인지적, 신체적, 정서적 행동적 변화를 수반하는 복잡한 집합체이다. 하지만 위험이 실제 이상으로 지각되었을 때, 부적절한 불안 반응이 뒤따를 수 있다. 이러한 불안 반응은 사회불안이 높은 사람들을 악순환에 빠지게 한다. 그들이 가진 불안은 사회적 상황을 부정적으로 평가받는 상황이라 지각하게 만들고, 이는 그들이 사회적 단서를 처리하는데 간섭하게 된다. 그리고 그들이 불안할 때 하는 몇몇 행동방식들은 다른 이들로부터 친근하지 못한 행동들을 유도하기도 한다.
