Introduction:
TNFα was discovered in the 1970s as an agent that induced necrosis in some solid tumors (Carswell et al., 1975). Shortly after, its gene was cloned and recombinant TNFα was expressed in Escherichia coli (Fransen et al., 1985; Shirai et al., 1985; Wang et al., 1985). TNFα is a transmembrane 26 KDa protein expressed by activated monocytes/macrophages and other cells of the immune system, as well as a diverse array of non-immune cells including endothelial cells and fibroblasts (Fransen et al., 1985).
