1. Doing the right thing
★The author(Michael Sandel) in this book, is not providing much of his opinion but proposes us some possible real-life moral dilemmas, making us think about those problems ahead and then be critically equipped. There are many stances proposed in this book(utilitarianism, libertarianism, Kantianism,…), so I would like to agree or disagree to each examples or stances here after. I highlighted my opinion with blue color.
1-1) Introduction
★In the summer of 2004, Hurricane Charley roared out of the Gulf of Mexico and swept across Florida. It left a debate about price gouging. A lot of people regarding the hurricane, for example, people regarding chain saws, roof repair and hotels, knew the demand is on rise and inflated the prices. People outraged about it.
★Question) Should the state prohibit the price gouging even if doing so interferes with the freedom of buyers and sellers to make whatever deals they choose?
★People disagreed to the price-gouging law and reasons: Limit the use of such things (things with inflated price) by consumers and motivate the suppliers in far-off places to provide the goods. The price simply reflects the value that buyers and sellers choose to place.
★People agreed to the price-gouging law and reasons: They state that this is an emergency where buyers under duress have no freedom. They have no choice but to buy the inflated products, so it is unfair in terms of welfare and freedom.
