Mitochondria
mitochondria, chloroplast, peroxisome과 같은 세포 소기관은 단백질을 선별하고 수송하는데 관여한다. 동시에 여러 종류의 대사작용을 거치기도 하는데 mitochondria는 빛 에너지를 이용하여 물과 이산화탄소로부터 탄수화물을 합성하는 것을 주 활동으로 한다. Mitochondria의 rRNA, tRNA와는 달리 대부분의 mitochondria유전체는 DNA replication, transcription, translation에 필요한 단백질을 암호화하지 않는다. mitochondria 같은 경우는 1000~1500여 개의 단백질이 필요한 반면 mitochondria의 유전자는 이 중 단 1%의 정보만을 암호화하고 있다. 나머지 필요한 단백질은 세포 자체의 핵이 암호화하고 있으며 free cytosolic ribosome에서 합성되어 세포질에서 mitochondria내의 기질로 유입된다.
