Dexibuprofen은 1964년에 호주에서 처음으로 제제화되어 사용하기 시작한 약으로 미국에서는 사용하지 않지만 호주나 유럽 등지에서는 많이 처방되는 소염 진통제 중의 하나이다. ibuprofen은 이전부터 많이 사용해왔던 Ibuprofen의 이성질체로 Ibuprofe n은 R(-)Ibuprofen과 S(+)Ibuprofen의 두 가지 거울상 이성질체가 1:1의 비율로 섞여있는 이성질체 화합물(Racemic mixture)형태이다. 이 중 약리학적 효과를 나타내는 것은 S(+)Ibuprofen이므로 이 유효성분만을 분리해낸 것이 Dexibuprofen이다. 그러므로 Ibuprofen보다 적은 용량으로 동일한 효과를 나타내며 작용 시간이 짧거나 부작용의 발생이 적다는 장점이 있다. 더욱이 Ibuprofen은 R(-) 형태가 S(+)로 변환되어 효과를 나타내기 때문에 그만큼의 시간이 걸리지만 Dexibuprofen은 이미 변환된 상태이므로 빠른 효과를 기대할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. Dexibuprofen은 우리 몸의 통증 및 염증과 함께 생성되는 매개물질인 Prostaglandin (PG)가 만들어 지는 과정에 관여하는 효소인 Cyclooxygenase (COX)를 저해하여 항염, 진통, 해열 효과를 나타내며 기존 NSAIDs와 같은 COX 저해제로 구분되고 있다.
Pseudoephedrine는 Phenethylamine과 A mphetamine 계열의 교감신경흥분제로 호흡기 점막의 α-수용체에 대한 직접적인 흥분작용으로 혈관수축을 일으키고 β-수용체를 직접 자극하여 기관지 이완 작용, 심박동수 증가, 심근수축력 증가 효과를 나타낸다. 주로 코 막힘 완화제나 각성제로 사용되고 있다.
감기는 100여종이 넘는 바이러스가 끊임없이 변종을 일으키며 발생한다. 코(비강)와 목(인두)에 염증이 생기는 것을 말하며 염증이 생기는 부위를 지칭해 상기도염이라고도 한다.
