It’s reported that South Korea ranked 118th out of 143 countries on the ‘experience of happiness’. Please discuss and explain the reasons behind this social phenomenon in Korea with concrete examples.
There is a trendy word used among younger South Korean, ‘Hell Chosun’, which is a self-ridicule term that criticizes the current socioeconomic state of South Korea. It is combination of ‘Hell’ and ‘Chosun’, ‘Chosun’ is former name of South Korea that a dynasty lasted from 1392 until Korea colonized by Japan in 1910 so that it is considered dark ages in the history of Korea. It is a tragedy that so many South Korean call their country as a hell. Although the economy of South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and the eleventh largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the world, you can easily find research-materials that most of them have experienced unhappy life. Even South Korea’s suicide rate remained the highest among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), 2012 data OECD showed.
