“Reunification is like hitting the jackpot”. This is what the President of Korea said when a reporter asked for further details on her opinion about reunification of Korea during the January 6th press conference. She also said, “Some Koreans oppose reunification in fear that the cost of reunification would be too high.” After the press conference, there had been controversies regarding the economic effects that reunification will bring to South Korea. In fact, many studies have been conducted to compare the pros and cons of reunification of Korea. Since the effects of reunification are not predictable, it is difficult to form a consensus among the public regarding the validity of reunification. While it is impossible for anyone to predict a scenario of reunification of Korea, I believe that South and North Korea should be reunified for the long-term advancement of the Korean economy. First of all, South and North Korea should be reunified to reduce the national defense expenditure in South Korea. Both South and North Korea spend considerable amount of budget for national defense purposes
