In “Bros Before Hos,” Michael Kimmel discusses masculinity in America. Kimmel argues that “The code of masculinity that guys are expected to follow” (461) is absurd and too excessive. He writes, “Here’s what guys say, summarized into a set of current epigrams” (462). By listing “Real Guy’s Top Ten List” (462), he stresses the severity of the problem. The problems are causing masculinity crisis in America. Kimmel writes, “No wonder boys are more prone to depression, suicidal behavior, and various other forms of out-of-control or out-of-touch behaviors than girls are” (470). The masculinity crisis is happening right now, and it is so dangerous and serious.
When I first arrived in America, I could feel directly that many Americans are conscious of masculinity. One of my American friends asked, “Why do you wear skinny jeans?” At that time, I did not know that why he said so. After that, I could find that quite many Americans think that skinny jeans are what only gays wear. However, the jeans that I wore were made in Italy, and there are so many men who wear those jeans as a fashion all over the world.
