1. 폐기종의 병태 생리학
폐기종이란 종말 세기관지에 위치한 원위부 공기공관이 파괴되어 폐의 폐포들이 점점 커지는 상태이다. 폐기종은염증으로 인한 기관지 폐쇄나 숨을 내 쉴때 파괴된세기관지로 인해 공기들이 폐포에 갇혔을때 기관지의 압력을 증가 시키고 이러한 상태는 환자의 호흡곤란을 일으킨다. (VanPutte et al., 2014).

2. 폐기종의 증상, 증후
폐기종의 증상으로는 염증 반응으로 인한 가래를 동반한 만성기침, 손상된 세기관지로 인한 호흡곤란, 산소부족으로 인한 청색증과 피로감이다(Braber, 2011).
VanPutte(2011)은 흡연이 폐기종의 대표적인 원인중 하나라는 점과 담배에 포함된 화학성은 페 세포를 손상시키고 염증반응을 일으킨다고 한다. 만성흡연자 인 대상자는 폐기종 위험군이며 대상자가 여전히 흡연을 하고 있다는 사실은 기관지 염증반응을 일으킬 가능성이 비흡연자에 비해 높다고 할 수 있다.
