Conflicts of various sorts have been everyday occurrences in Korea. Nobody was surprised when the Grand National Party and the Democratic Party staged simultaneous sit-ins in the National Assembly - an unheard of occurrence in a developed democracy.

Koreans have long been accustomed to this kind of partisan paralysis in the National Assembly. Coupled with ideological polarization, inter-party conflict intensifies, making every partisan disagreement a flashpoint.

Regarding society, we can also observe a number of conflicts around the nation. Labor-management clashes have been a problem for years. Most recently we have seen the Pyeongtaek-based Ssangyong factory strike, which has lasted several months.

So much time has passed that the company has long lost the opportunity to resuscitate its domestic and international competitive edge.

The problem, however, lies in the mode in which the conflicts are resolved. In some societies, social disagreements are resolved through informed discussion and ruled procedures.

Conflicts are there, but they are resolved by the due process of law, and order is maintained.

In other societies, on the other hand, social conflicts rarely get resolved via dialogue between parties concerned, eventually leading to violence and radicalism. Street demonstrations, sit-ins, strikes and sabotage are frequently resorted to. Public order is disturbed. The National Assembly session is halted and factory production screeches to a halt.
