INTRODUCTION
In this paper, we are going to take an insight into retail industry or more accurately – food retailing industry. The paper will start with a short description of the industry as well as a short description of an industry player which in this case is the multinational grocery store giant TESCO. Later on, we will state some of the major issues or problems faced by Tesco and provide some recommendations to address those issues. We chose this industry as it is relevant for us since we are dealing with the players of this industry on a very regular basis. Furthermore, we have been wondering why is it so that many times some of the products are finished way before the new shipment is coming and sometimes the customer might need to wait for days to get the products he or she wants.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INDUSTRY
Retail industry consists of various segments such as department stores, discount stores, specialty stores and even seasonal retailers. Not long ago retail industry consisted of both private entrepreneurs and larger, multinational chains such as Carrefour or Footlocker. Nowadays the trend is a bit different. Sole proprietors are no longer establishing their own businesses but relying on franchised and licensed chains instead, e.g. McDonald’s. That is because it is easier to start a business as a franchise rather than starting to keep your own store as those larger, franchised companies provide you with standardized concept, ready supply chain, organization wide marketing campaigns etc.
