The country I research in West Africa is Mali (officially the republic of Mali). It is a landlocked nation in West Africa and the seventh largest nation in Africa. Mali is surrounded by many countries such as Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cote D’lvoire (Ivory Coast), Guinea, Senegal, and Mauritania. Mali was once a part of three West African Empires which were Ghana, Mali, and Songhai Empire. The country name of Mali was come from Mali Empire. Mali also was controlled by France the same as other African nations in late 1800s. Mali was independent from France in 1960 as the Mali Federation.

Mali’s economic performance is very fragile, characterized to climate conditions, and fluctuating terms of trade. Therefore, Mali’s economic is very dependable to neighbor countries. Mali exports cotton, cereals, and rice and import construction machines, cars, and vegetables. Most industries and factories were owned by government, and all energy resource businesses are operated by foreign countries because Mali does not have sufficient energy producing technologies.
Politic
In 1960, Mali was independent from France, so they formed republic political government and elected the president. However, in 1968, one of military generals took Mali and prohibited any political activities. In 1974, they reformed political policy a little bit. They elected 82 congress men, but there is only one political party (Democratic Union of the Malian People/UDPM). Therefore, elections mean nothing in Mali.
