I. Introduction
It is almost agreed, among scholars in the field of international relations, that democracies do not fight one another although there is no agreed causal logic between democracy and peace. The democratic peace thesis is not only a simple description of a phenomenon in international politics but also a widely accepted argument presupposing that democratic norms and values prevent democracies from taking military actions against one another.
The essay topic requires us to tackle mainly two different questions : the importance of the democratic peace thesis and its influence on core realists assumptions. Bearing these questions in my mind, I shall make a subdivision of my arguments in the following four sections.
Firstly, I shall briefly explain what the democratic peace proposition is (section II). Secondly, I shall argue that democratic peace proponents do not seem to clearly explain the causal direction between plausible independent variables and a dependent variable(democratic peace), and that the democratic peace thesis seems to contradict itself in terms of ‘democracy’ since developed democracies, mainly the USA, intervened in other democracies several times through covert actions(section III), and I shall show that an alternative argument can be put forward(section IV).
