The standard that differentiates the Matrix and Plato’s conception from Baudrillard’s conception is the matter of existence of reality. Baudrillard believes there is no real world since humans live in continuative simulacra. He asserts there is nothing in a real world through his term “The desert of real world itself” (Baudrillard 1). His concept, ‘The desert of real world’, conveys that nothing exists in the reality in that there are only simulacra of reality. According to Baudrillard’s logic, the one is in the cave will go to another cave after the one gets out from the cave since Baudrillard thinks there are only continuous simulacra out of simulacra. There is no need to endeavor to perceive reality.
However, there is a real world in the Matrix as well as in Plato’s conception. Since there is a real world, an effort to perceive reality is necessary. Plato says, “he had dragged him out into the light of the sun, …wouldn’t he have his eyes full of its beam and be unable to see…even one of the things now said to be true?” (Plato 194) He describes the difficulty to see truth as pain of eyes. As times goes by, Plato says, he gets accustomed eventually as he can perceive from shadows to sunlight (Plato195) Even though it is shocking and painful to perceive truth at the first time, it will be alleviated as time passes. This idea is exactly portrayed in the Matrix. When Neo asks to Morpheus why his eye hurts, Morpheus says, “You’ve never uses them before.” As Morpheus says, Neo never uses them before since he used to be in the matrix; however, he now can use his eyes, for he is in the real world. He was not ready to see the truth at the time. If the movie follows Baudrillard’s idea, Neo and other people shouldn`t feel pain on their eyes since they never seen the reality. The definite existence of reality in the Matrix and the pain to perceive the reality both verify how the movie contains Plato’s idea rather than Baudrillard’s.
