I. Introduction
1. Direction of paper
1.1. What’s issue?
There are two steps with regard to the issue in this paper. One is to select business sector such as manufacturing, retail for the purpose of discussing the key economic characteristics. The other is to find how those characteristics make influences on the business area that I must choose during the past five years. In the similar sense, the point of this paper is to find the connection between economics and management for the specific business area. On the one hand, my choice as the topic of this assignment is the semiconductor business.
1.2. Business sector
What I want to study is the semiconductor area. Why do I choose that business? First, getting information on the topic is not difficult because now I am working at the champion company in view of DRAM, which is the Samsung electronics. In addition to that, I am South Korean: there is a lot of data regarding the semiconductor industry thanks to the success of that business. In fact, the DRAM market share of South Korean manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and Hynix is around 70% in the worldwide. Second, this business is not only local or domestic but also global, which means that there are much possibilities to have the economic features. Particularly, this is directly related to the global economic status because the D-RAM that is a key product in the semiconductor is main component for computers in the world. Lastly, the changes of semiconductor business are so fast due to the diverse situations; for example, the technology development, the changes of customer needs, etc. The point in this sentence is that the semiconductor business is sensitive to the economy. In other words, that sensitiveness is able to link to the economic characteristics directly.
1.3. Economics characteristics that will be used
As far as the semiconductor is concerned, the theories that I am going to take into account in aspect of economy is four. Firstly, there is a supply and demand theory. This is the basic principle to make price for the semiconductors. Second, the thing that I want to touch is market structure; particularly, oligopoly. Third, there is the famous element in economics: foreign exchange rate. Actually, this makes a big impact on the export oriented companies. Lastly, I want to study or search for information on economy of scale. Basically, the semiconductor business is the area of manufacturing.
