Do you think people in Korea today are too self-reliant of not self- reliant enough?>

Emerson talks about the importance and the effects of self-reliance in his essay, “Self-Reliance”.
In fact, the essay suggests that readers should trust their own intuition and instinct, their inner voice and common sense, not following other’s opinions and conforming to the majority. That is, he emphasizes the individualism above society and religions. He describes it as divine not selfish.
I think that he a little exaggerates his idea. That’s because he mentions great man like Pythagoras, Socrates, Jesus, Luther, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton and especially God to support his idea. Also, Emerson defines genius at the beginning of “Self-Reliance”: “To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men-that is genius” (5). He says that every educated man realized that “envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide”, so he must be truly himself (2). In that point, I think that the word “suicide” is a little excessive because sometimes we need to imitate other’s works and ideas. Actually, there are many imitated works which become more something new. In addition, he explains the relationship between the individual and God, “the divine spirit” (8). He thinks that priest, doctrine, church and so on are not helpful, rather he thinks of this relationship with God as pure. Also, he explains the effects of self-reliance at the latter half of his essay. Emerson writes that greater self-reliance would make an innovation to religion, education, and other aspects of society. He explains concretely four effects of self-reliance as follows.
