Thyroid disease is one of the most common of the endocrine disorders. Every year, approximately 20 million Americans are diagnosed with the thyroid diseases, and many of those who are affected don’t even know they have the problem (Ruggieri & Isascs, 2003). There are two types of the disease. One is hyperthyroidism which is the hyperactivity of thyroid gland with sustained increase in the syntheses and release of thyroid hormones. And the other is hypothyroidism which is a disease with insufficient thyroid hormone in the blood (Lewis, 2007).
The purpose of this paper is to identify what hyperthyroidism is, what types of treatments are currently available for this disease, and what should be taken into consideration when a patient selects the treatment. Furthermore, recent findings as to nutritional and educational interventions will be discussed.
Hyperthyroidism is an autoimmune disorder in which the body immune system let the thyroid produce too much thyroid hormone. It occurs more frequently in women than in men and the age group with the highest frequency is 20 to 40 years.
