The Debate at Sparta and its Analysis
Introduction:
They say history repeats itself. Students from elementary to high schools are not taught simply to entertain the minds of the young ones or to torture them during exam times with memorizing excruciating historical dates and events that occurred then. Certain events are not to be repeated, yet these events recur only due to a single factor which is part of the inherent nature of humans hubris.
Hubris lies within an individual or an entity and is clearly expressed when power is given to that individual/entity. Believing they are all powerful and thus undefeatable, they become overtly arrogant; their rationale behind actions whether right or wrong is the rationale for everyone, their actions whether wanted or unwanted are actions for those that are "weak", and their knowledge of affairs whether subjective or objective is knowledge of the gods. In the end, hubris is what brings them to their knees in defeat when others decide to fight against them. This is clearly shown by Thucydides in his book of the History of the Peloponnesian War and present-day scholars have compared the hubris of Athens to what seems the hubris of the United States now.
