Liminality in Henrik Ibsen`s The Wild Duck

Since The Wild Duck was first published in 1884, it has been considered as one of the ambiguous and even mysterious works in Henrik Ibsen`s later period. But it is certain that this work reflects the individual and also social breach between ideal and truth in life. In a letter to a friend, Georg Brandes, Ibsen says, "what is really needed," as to the social and political situation of his time "is a revolution of the human spirit".1) Regarding his remark, we find in the play that Ibsen dramatizes an intentional chaos and confusion of man`s truth in a tragi-comical way for the pursuit of the revolution. This dramatic situation is applied to Turner`s liminality. The "liminal phase" is a realm of the possibility of change in which new thoughts and relationships in a new society arise.2) However, Ibsen`s liminality has a scapegoat to which is required by society to transfer its own faults. Ibsen describes it using farcical elements in characterization, but his vision of the future society is pessimistic. As one possible interpretation of the play, the elements of liminality will be examined in the play with the discussion of the structure, character, and symbol of The Wild Duck.
