Unlikely, classifying of the indefinite article “a/an”, is non-specific reference which means if speaker say ‘give me a pen’, the indefinite article “a” implies any member of a class of objects. It occurs typically when the referent of the noun has not been mentioned before and is assumed to be either unknown or unfamiliar to the addressee both from the speaker and the listener. However, the distinction between identifying and classifying reference are not sufficient to make the distinction between definite and indefinite articles. If the reference is not marked as having no relevant individual existence or reference identity, the zero article “Ø” is required as ‘no differentiation required’ by Yule (2009). This paper discerned the important function of the zero articles, taking cognizance of Sand’s (2004) view that, “…no study of article use is truly complete without the discussion of the zero article” (p. 295). For the purpose of this paper an explanation was given of the two types of zero article (zero and null) and it was showed how these occurred in alternation with the definitive article “a/an” and the definitive article “the”. First, the zero articles are used for plural countable nouns and non-countable nouns when indefinite articles do not apply. Second, they may be used for singular countable nouns in alternation with the definite article “the” and singular proper nouns, only in rather special circumstances.
Although this paper aims to provide a clear picture for using the English articles, it is unfortunately hard to present a clear guild line and to present precise rules for using the English articles. Under all circumstances, as the rules of English (like most other languages) have exceptions. Maybe there is some truth in the proverb: ‘The exception proves the rule’.
