According to Vivien Stewart, vice president of education programs at the Asia society, “People talk about their concern that the U.S. is behind other countries in math and science, but we are much further behind the rest of the industrialized world in language learning than we are in math and science.(2)” Today, the USA government and Americans rarely feel the necessity of learning other language. In some way, it is a natural result because almost all things can be done with English, which is an international language. In most sectors in other countries, English is being widely used and most countries usually teach English as a second or third language under the public education system. However, as long as Americans live in a globalized world, learning new languages also is necessary for Americans and considering the numerous benefits, American public schools should give American students bilingual or multilingual education.
