1 I wander thro` each charter`d street,
2 Near where the charter`d Thames does flow,
3 And mark in every face I meet
4 Marks of weakness, marks of woe.
 
5 In every cry of every Man,
6 In every Infant`s cry of fear,
7 In every voice, in every ban,
8 The mind-forg`d manacles I hear.
 
9 How the Chimney-sweeper`s cry
10 Every black`ning Church appalls;
11 And the hapless Soldier`s sigh
12 Runs in blood down Palace walls.
 
13 But most thro` midnight streets I hear
14 How the youthful Harlot`s curse
15 Blasts the new born Infant`s tear,
16 And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.

William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake`s work is now considered seminal in the history of both poetry and the visual arts. Blake`s prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". (Wikipedia)

< About the poetry 『London』> 

Q. What is the main theme of your poet <London>?
- I wanted to say about a social aspect of London. As you see in 4th line in my poet <Marks of weakness, marks of woe>, I wanted to say about weakness people, and misery people in London. Like prostitutes who suffer from a venereal disease or Chimney-sweeper`s cry. Contrast to poor people, charter`d street in line number1 means a few privileged people.
 
Q. Why did you write poet like that?
- Because of the Industrial Revolution, a few people became very rich. However contrast to them there were a lot of victim also. I wanted to tell about victims of Industrial Revolution in London.
