I. 율법의 의미
기독교에서는 율법이라는 용어를 복음과 대치시키는 관계로 율법의 본래 뜻을 잘 나타내지 못하고 있다. 히브리어 토라(הרות)가 헬라어 노모스(νομος)로 번역됨에 따라 노모스가 뜻하는 법을 의미하는 용어로 사용됨에 따라 어쩔 수 없이 법규의 의미를 나타나지만 토라의 본래의 뜻은 법규정이 아니다. 토라는 본래 하나님의 계시된 말씀으로 제사장들의 소관 업무이다(학 2:11). 제사장에게는 토라(הרות), 예언자에게는 말씀(רבד), 지혜자에게는 책략(הצע)인 것과 같다(렘 18:18).
토라란 용어는 히브리어 야라(הרי)의 사역형에서 유래된 형태로 그 뜻은 ‘가르치다’ ‘길/방향을 제시하다‘는 뜻이다. 레위기 10장 11절에 ‘제사장들은 하나님이 모세를 통하여 전하여 준 모든 규례를 이스라엘 자손들에게 가르치리라‘는 말이 토라와 같은 의미의 야라의 사역 부정형이다. 시편 119편 102절에서도 토라와 같은 어원인 가르친다는 말이 규례라는 말과 병행되고 있다. 따라서 구약에서 220회 나타나는 토라의 다양한 의미를 파악할 필요가 있다.
1) 토라의 일차적 의미는 가르친다는 뜻이다. 예언자가 제자들을 가르치는 가르침이나(사 8:16, 20), 현자들이 제자들을 가르치는 가르침(잠 7:2; 13:14)을 토라로 이해된다. 잠언 13장 14절에서 현자의 토라(교훈)는 생명의 샘이라고 한다. 가르친다는 의미에서 지금도 이스라엘 에서는 선생님을 ‘모라’(הרומ)라고 한다. 토라와 같은 어원이 이사야 9장 14절(한글역 15절)에 거짓 예언자를 가리켜 ‘거짓을 가르치는 예언자’라고 칭한다. 하박국 2장 18절에는 ‘거짓 선생’(רקשׁ הרומ)으로 표현되고 있다. 그래서 토라의 의미는 가르친다는 뜻에서 교육(teaching), 교훈(instruction, 잠 1:6; 6:20; 31:26), 교리(doctrine), 방향을 제시하는 길 안내(Guidance)라는 등의 뜻을 나타낸다.
2) 두 번째로 토라의 의미는 하나님의 말씀이나 뜻으로도 쓰인다. 예언서에서 토라는 계시된 하나님의 말씀(הוהי־רבד)으로 이해된다(사 1;10; 5:24; 말 2:6; 3:22). 이사야 1:10절이나 5:24절에 토라는 하나님의 말씀과 병행된다. 다시 말해 토라는 하나님으로부터 출발하기 때문에 여호와의 토라(הוהי תרות-출 13:9; 사 5:24; 30:9; 암 2:4; 겔 7:10) 또는 하나님의 토라(םיהולא תרות-사 1:10; 호 4:6; 37:31)고 부린다. 이 경우 토라는 말씀 또는 뜻으로 사용됨이 분명하다. 토라는 하나님의 자유로운 행위에 이스라엘이 어떻게 순종하고 살아갔느냐에 대한 반응으로 하나님의 의지와 뜻으로 이해되기 때문이다. 사무엘 하 7장 19절에 다윗의 기도에서 아담의 토라(םראה תרות)라는 의미는 사람의 생각이나 뜻이라는 뜻으로 이해된다. 즉 하나님의 뜻과 생각은 사람의 뜻과 생각과 다르다는 비유에서 쓰이고 있다.
