The linguistic landscape refers to ‘the visibility and salience of languages on public and commercial signs in a given territory or region’. More precisely: the language of public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings combines to form the linguistic landscape of a given territory, region, or urban agglomeration. (Landry & Bourhis, 1997: 25)

Background

In a typology suggested by Wienold(1994) language use on signs is characterized as part of one distinguishable type of language use in everyday life. If you have ever visited COEX in Seoul, you might have noticed a lot of English using shop signs in there. I was curious what Korean people think and how they feel about many English using shop signs. It is obvious landscape of Korea especially Seoul is changing and foreign languages are growing in the landscape as well.
