The movie shows the importance of hard work and action in America, and the bright future that comes with them. Although Tess did not graduate from a prestigious school nor has family connections, she sets a goal and tries hard to achieve it. She is brave enough to leave her boss and her boyfriend when she is not treated right and constantly tries to up grade her life.



One thing I would have loved to see in the movie is the life of Cynthia (Tess` friend). Cynthia is Tess` genuine friend and she helps her out a lot. She does not get jealous even when Tess gets a higher position and truly celebrates her friend`s success. Along with Tess and Jack, Cynthia is one of the few good people in the movie and I felt bad to see her stuck in the office as a secretary when Tess is beginning to live a whole new life. Also, Cynthia sitting in the office with bunch of other female secretaries makes it seem like aside from a few very lucky ones, most women will just end their career as secretaries. It would have been interesting if the movie could somehow incorporate the life of Cynthia and perhaps a few other secretaries and show their success.
