Abstract

The population of Korea has increased to more than 48 million. In addition, about 46% of the total population of Korea has lived in Seoul. There has been a disproportionate distribution. As a consequence, Urban sprawl is becoming a longstanding phenomenon. The problem of urban sprawl has been perceived as a social event. The effecting environmental problems have influenced to decrease in quality of life. The purpose of this report is to investigate the problems of urban sprawl such as environment pollution, land price and lack of public facilities. Moreover, this study has found that government efforts to control the growth of the region have not been successful. The Korean experience shows that direct government intervention for growth control is likely to create negative effects rather than to provide to the balanced population. This report also tries to prevent further unplanned urban sprawl.

Abstract

1. Introduction

The main purposes of this report are to investigate problems associated with urban sprawl in Korea. This report has been provided to contribute a new policy direction for control of urban sprawl by Korean government.
Ecological environment is rapidly deteriorating because of the high-speed industrial development. Consequently, pristine lands have been despoiled. What is worse, nature and an ecosystem is broken. There is no doubt that our land is fatiguing from unsystematic developing.
One of the main issues in modern industrial society is urbanization. Many people are streaming towards the metropolitan area for their benefit. Then, metropolitan area has grown recklessly. It has negatively affected the living of people.
