Abstract
The establishment of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is expressly provided in the 1992 United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas (UNCLOS). Through certain privileges and benefits, the EEZ affords economic advantages to countries. It originally aims to aid Third World countries in their quest for development and cross-cultural ties. However, the EEZ is also a source of international disputes.
This paper covers a wide range of information about the EEZ including its international definition, historical basis and process of incorporation into the UNCLOS. The paper also enumerates the primary functions of the EEZ and the conflicts surrounding it. These conflicts are fairly recent and have greatly affected the status of the EEZ. Finally, a conclusion is drawn from all the pertinent information presented.
