Richard N. Ostling joined TIME magazine in 1969 as a staff correspondent; he has been a writer specializing in religious affairs since 1975. He has written 20 cover stories, most recently "God and Women" (1992) and the "Generation that Forgot God" (1993) and has been the lead reporter in twelve other cover stories on religion. He also broadcasts "Report on Religion," which is syndicated nationwide twice a week by CBS Radio and does regular religion reports for public television's MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour.
Ostling has won both of the major awards for religion news writing in the general (non-religious) press, the Templeton Award and Supple Award, which are administered by the Religion Newswriters Association, the organization for secular press religion specialists. In recent years he has also received the Block Award of Religious News Service, the Leidt Award of the Episcopal Church, and the Wilbur Award of Religious Public Relations Council, and TIME has twice won the R.N.A.'s Schachern Award for the best religion sections of the year. Ostling has also won high rankings in the annual Mediaguide books for his "professional treatment of theology," described as "always probing and sensitive."
Born in Endicott, New York, on July 14, 1940, Ostling is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a senior editor of The Michigan Daily. He earned an M.S. in journalism from Northwestern University and an M.A. in religion from The George Washington University, and also holds an honorary Litt. D. from Gordon College. Before coming to TIME, he worked for the Morning News and Evening Journal, in Wilmington, Del., and as news editor of Christianity Today, a Protestant magazine then based in Washington, D.C.
In 1974-76, Ostling was the first magazine writer to serve as president of the Religion News writers Association. He has written two books and has spoken widely on religious affairs and taught short courses in journalism on two campuses. Ostling is listed in "Who's Who In America." He is married to Joan K. Ostling who is an assistant professor of English and journalism at Nyack College. They have two children and live in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
