버추얼 월드 패러다임에 따른 아바타 유형 및 특성 연구 -세대별 대표 플랫폼을 중심으로- (A Study on Avatar Types and Characteristics According to Virtual World Paradigms – With a Focus on Representative Platforms by Generation)

초록

(연구배경과 목적) 디지털 기술과 정보 기술의 발전으로 인해 가상세계에서의 삶이 점차 중요해지고 있으며, 이에 따라 가상세계에서 사용자를 대리하는 아바타의 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 그동안 가상세계 패러다임의 발전 단계로의 연구가 활발히 이루어져 왔으나 이에 따른 아바타의 유형과 특성에 관한 연구는 상대적으로 부족하다. 본 연구는 버추얼 월드 패러다임의 발전 단계에 따른 아바타의 유형 및 특성을 파악함으로써 아바타의 발전 추이를 조망하고, 향후 버추얼 월드 플랫폼에서의 아바타 개발에 대한 방향성을 제시하고자 행해졌다. (연구범위 및 방법) 본 연구에서는 아바타가 핵심 요소인 버추얼 월드를 연구대상으로 한정한다. 버추얼 월드의 발전 단계를 크게 다섯 단계로 분류한 뒤, 각 단계의 대표적인 플랫폼으로 'Colossal Cave Adventure', 'The Habitat', 'Second Life', 'VR Chat', 'Virtual Heroes'를 선정하고, 각 사례에서의 아바타 유형과 특성을 분석한다. (결과) 분석 결과, 버추얼 월드 패러다임에 따라 아바타의 유형과 특성이 뚜렷하게 달라짐을 확인하였으며, 플랫폼의 발전 단계에 따라 아바타의 외형과 행동이 실제 사람의 그것과 점차 흡사해지는 일관된 흐름을 확인하였다. 1단계 텍스트 네임형 아바타의 경우 아바타가 텍스트 형식으로 표시되며 역할이 제한적이다. 2단계 2D 캐릭터형 아바타의 경우 아바타가 그래픽 형태로 표현되나 외형과 행동이 단순한 만화형으로 구현되며, 3단계 3D 휴먼형 아바타의 경우 강력한 컴퓨팅 파워로 인해 아바타가 생생한 3D 그래픽으로 구현되며 행동 표현도 자연스러워진다. 4단계 VR 실감형 아바타의 경우 3D 스캔 및 모션 캡처를 통해 아바타의 외모와 행동이 실제 사용자의 그것과 근사해지며, 생성형 AI의 역할이 증가한 5단계 AI 생성형 아바타의 경우 실제 사람의 데이터를 학습해 행동 양식이 사람과 매우 흡사하고 표현력이 뛰어난 아바타가 구현됨을 확인하였다. 전반적으로 1~4단계에 걸쳐 그래픽 디스플레이 기술과 캡처링 기술 발전을 통해 사용자 아바타의 사실성이 증대되어왔으며, 5단계에서는 학습이 가능한 생성형 AI 기술의 도입으로 모든 캐릭터를 사실성 높게 구현하는 것이 가능해졌다. (결론) 기술환경의 변화에 따라 버추얼 월드 플랫폼의 패러다임은 계속 변화해 왔으며, 이에 따라 아바타의 유형과 특성도 계속 변화해 왔다. 이러한 변화는 디지털 정보 기술, 인공 지능 기술 등 기술환경에 발전에 따라 단계적으로 이루어져 왔으며, 아바타의 외형, 행동 및 표현 양식이 실제 사람의 그것과 매우 근사해지는 방향으로 전개되어 왔다. 당분간은 4단계 VR 실감형 아바타와 5단계 AI 생성형 아바타에 대한 개발이 통합적으로 이루어질 것으로 예측되며, AI로 생성된 실감형 아바타에 대한 수요가 증가할 것으로 예측된다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Life in virtual worlds has gained increasing significance with the progress of digital and information technology, leading to increased use of avatars. Despite extensive research delving into the developmental trajectories of virtual world paradigms, there remains a relative scarcity of studies focusing on the typology and characteristics of avatars corresponding to these evolving stages. Therefore, this study aims to identify the diverse types and distinct attributes of avatars in alignment with the development stages of virtual world paradigms through case analysis. (Method) This study confines its scope to virtual worlds, excluding mirror worlds from its purview. Virtual worlds are broadly categorized into five developmental stages, with each stage represented by seminal platforms: 'Colossal Cave Adventure', 'The Habitat', 'Second Life', 'VR Chat', and 'Virtual Heroes'. These platforms serve as quintessential embodiments of their respective developmental stages. The study scrutinizes the types and defining characteristics of avatars within each case, illuminating the nuanced evolution of avatar design and functionality across the continuum of virtual world development. (Results) Through the analysis, it was confirmed that the types and characteristics of avatars distinctly change according to the development stages of virtual world platforms. It was also observed that with the advancement of technology, the appearance and behavior of avatars gradually resemble those of real people. In the first stage, text-based avatars are displayed in textual format with limited roles. In the second stage, 2D character-based avatars are represented graphically but with a simple cartoon-like appearance and behavior. In the third stage, 3D human-like avatars, empowered by increased computing power, are implemented with vivid 3D graphics and naturalistic behavior. In the fourth stage, immersive human avatars in VR environments exhibit appearance and behavior highly similar to those of actual users through 3D scanning and motion capture. In the fifth stage, AI-generated avatars, with the increasing role of generative AI, are confirmed to exhibit behavior patterns similar to real humans and have excellent expressiveness by learning from real human data. Overall, user avatars have become increasingly realistic through the development of graphic display technology and capturing technology across stages 1 to 4, and with the introduction of trainable generative AI technology in stage 5, it has become possible to make all virtual world characters highly realistic. (Conclusions) The paradigm of virtual world platforms has evolved in tandem with technological advancements, resulting in corresponding changes in avatar types and characteristics. These changes have been occurring in line with technological advances, resulting in avatars' appearance, behavior, and expressions that closely resemble those of real people. It is predicted that VR immersive avatars and AI generative avatars will be integrated in the near future, driving up demand for AI-generated immersive avatars.
