초록

This study aimed to explore the effects of a smartphone flashcard application (hereafter app) on English vocabulary for specific purposes in the 1st year nursing majors. Seventy-four college students whose ages varied from 20 to more than 40 participated in a questionnaire survey regarding the smartphone vocabulary app. They took pre- and post-tests to examine their vocabulary improvement. They used the smartphone flashcard app for thirteen weeks during the fifteen weeks of the research period and posted the study records to the LMS every week. The results of this study showed that the more frequently the students used the app, the higher achievement they got regardless of their ages. Also, the lower-scored group indicated much improvement in the post-test compared to the higher-scored group, which showed statistical significance. It was assumed that the study with a smartphone app positively affected vocabulary improvement in English for specific purposes. Several implications are discussed based on the results of the study.
