규포 황윤섭론 - 기독교적 시정신과 아동·학생문단의 진작 (An Essay on Gyupo(葵圃), Hwang Yun-Seop；Christian Poesie and the Stimulation of Literature Groups for Children and Students)

초록

This article investigates the literary history and prestige of a poet, Hwang Yun-Seop, not largely mentioned in the Korean modern literary history. Hwang Yun-seop had been actively involved in literary activities before and after Korean Liberation, but he has received little attention compared to other authors. This has been due to his young death at age 36, the lack of empirical data about his life, and his literature activities focused mainly on children’s literature media.
Hwang Yun-Seop had produced creative works, ranging from poetry to children’s songs. His first work was an essay 「The Season of Depression」 published in 『Yeonhui Sion(延禧詩蘊)』 of Yeonhui College. Around the end of Japanese imperialism, he showed his ability as a poet when he released his works 「Lighthouse」 and 「Fountain」 in Maeilsinbo(每日新報). Immediately after the Korean Liberation, he released his collection of poems such as 『Gyupo’s poetical works(葵圃詩集)』 and 『A collection of Green Grain(靑顆集)』, as well as a number of children’s songs in 『Children(兒童)』 and 『Sprout(새싹)』, which were children’s literature media in the Daegu region. At the same time, he translated and introduced European poems and fairy tales for children. His poetry can be divided into two categories: One consists of songs for christian faith, and the other songs for daily routines of petit bourgeois related to himself, mother, wife, or young daughter.
In the chaos immediately following the Korean Liberation, he wrote poems, expressing the expectations and frustrations about the Liberation. But he did not show a clear political ideology. This was not very different from the ideology of 『Bamboo Sprout(竹筍)』 published in the Daegu region. However he did not participate as a member of the poetic circle of Bamboo Sprout(竹筍). Instead, he joined the main writing staff of children’s literature magazine in the Daegu area. This can be related to his faith as an educator. Moreover, working as a teacher and the principal of Sin-Myeong Girls’ Middle School in Daegu, he played an important role as a mediator in stimulating groups of student literature of Daegu. Hwang Yun-Seop contributed to expanding the field of literature in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions through activating children’s literature and groups of student literature.
A future study should further investigate the history of his family and the interrelationships between his christian faith and his works.
